As we begin a new fiscal year, I have been reflecting on a theme that continues to shape the future of research at UC Davis: collaboration.

This spring's Convergence Research Celebration highlighted the remarkable work that occurs when investigators bring together different perspectives and areas of expertise to tackle complex scientific challenges. The event served as a reminder that some of our most innovative discoveries emerge not within traditional disciplinary boundaries, but at the converging intersections between fields.

The importance of this approach is only growing. Today's health challenges are increasingly multifaceted, and teams that can integrate diverse expertise are best positioned to address them. By working together, researchers from different backgrounds can ask bigger questions, pursue more ambitious goals and accelerate the translation of discoveries into tangible benefits for patients and communities.  Examples include efforts to address mechanisms that underlie the social determinants of health, and the application of engineering principles to devise patient-centered assistive devices for specific health challenges.

In this light, I have been especially encouraged by the strong response to this year's Convergence Research Award program. The enthusiasm for collaborative research across the university reflects a shared commitment to addressing important problems through partnership and innovation. As applications are reviewed, it is clear that faculty across UC Davis continue to embrace opportunities to build new connections and explore ideas that might not otherwise be developed.

The School of Medicine remains committed to supporting these efforts. Whether through funding opportunities, research infrastructure, professional development programs or events that bring colleagues together, we will continue to invest in initiatives that foster meaningful collaboration.

Thank you for the creativity, dedication and collegiality you bring to our research community. I look forward to seeing the new discoveries that will emerge in the months and years ahead.

July 2026 School of Medicine Research Image Competition Award Winners

"Eternal Bloom," the winning microscopy image shows engineered materials designed to fight cancer interacting with tumor cells. Researchers use fluorescence microscopy to study how these materials behave within tumors and activate therapeutic effects where they are needed most.

Congratulations to the latest winners of the School of Medicine Research Image Competition! The winners are Kit Lam, Chin-Wei Hsu and Ruiqi Huang. Hsu, who composed the image, is a graduate student, Huang is a postdoc and Lam is a distinguished professor and chairman emeritus in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and professor of hematology and oncology.

2026 Matching Program for Purchase of Shared Equipment Award Recipients

The UC Davis School of Medicine has announced the recipients of its 2026 Matching Program for Purchase of Shared Equipment Awards, supporting the acquisition of research equipment that will be shared across departments and research programs to advance scientific discovery and foster collaboration across the School of Medicine.

The program provides matching funds from the School of Medicine to support multi-user equipment purchases. The program funds up to 50% of approved equipment costs, with the remaining support provided by departments or other funding sources. The initiative prioritizes equipment that advances School of Medicine research goals and expands access to critical research resources. 

A distinguishing feature of the Matching Program for Purchase of Shared Equipment is its emphasis on broad accessibility. Award recipients are expected to make equipment available to the wider School of Medicine research community and track usage to demonstrate the impact of these shared resources.

By supporting shared-use equipment, the program helps reduce duplication of costly infrastructure and expands access to advanced technologies across departments and research disciplines. This award embodies the School of Medicine’s commitment to investing in research infrastructure that enables cutting-edge science while promoting efficient stewardship of resources and interdisciplinary collaboration.

    Daniah Beleford, assistant professor of pediatrics and physiology & membrane biology, received funding for the purchase of a Varioskan ALF Multimode Microplate Reader, a versatile instrument that can measure a variety of signals from cells, proteins and other materials, making it useful for many types of biomedical research.

2026 Reaching Across the Causeway Awards

The UC Davis School of Medicine, UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) and UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center have selected six interdisciplinary research teams to receive 2026 Reaching Across the Causeway (RAC) Awards.

The annual program supports new collaborations that bring together investigators from both schools to tackle complex biomedical and veterinary health challenges. Each team consists of at least one PI from either the School of Medicine or the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine and at least one co-applicant from the other school. Each winner will receive $50,000 in seed funding to generate preliminary data and position the projects for future extramural funding.

This year's awards support research ranging from cancer biology and infectious diseases to neuroinflammation, environmental health and regenerative medicine. The awardees are:

    Damian Genetos, professor of anatomy, physiology, and cell biology in the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, for the project, "Bone-mimetic Engineered Niches as Selective Traps for Early Capture and Molecular Profiling of Skeletal Metastasis," the goal of which is to develop bone-like implants that can capture and identify the cancer cells most likely to spread to bone.

    Angela Gomez-Simmonds, assistant professor of infectious diseases in the School of Medicine, for the study, "Assessing Clostridioides difficile Colonization Resistance and Antimicrobial Resistance Genes Across Patient Samples." Convergence Research Celebration 2026

The June 9 event featured a series of TED-style presentations from leading UC Davis researchers whose work exemplifies convergence research by bringing together expertise from diverse fields to generate new discoveries and solutions. Hosted by Ted Wun, associate dean for clinical and translational research for the School of Medicine and director of the Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC), the gathering emphasized UC Davis’ longstanding commitment to collaboration and team science. 

A special highlight of the celebration was the attendance of UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May, and Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Mary Croughan as guests of honor, underscoring the university’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research and innovation.

The celebration opened with remarks from Kim E. Barrett, vice dean for research for the School of Medicine. Barrett welcomed attendees and highlighted the growing opportunities for collaboration across UC Davis campuses and the success of the Convergence Pilot Awards program. She reported that the program has generated publications, new grant submissions and approximately $3.6 million in reported extramural funding from a maximum pilot investment of $200,000.

Throughout the afternoon, seven faculty presenters illustrated how convergence research is informing their own projects:

Following the presentations, speakers returned to the stage for a panel discussion moderated by Courtney Lyles, professor of public health sciences and director of the Center for Healthcare Policy and Research. The discussion explored the opportunities and challenges of collaborative science and the importance of bringing together different perspectives to accelerate discovery and translation. 

The afternoon concluded with a networking reception and exhibitor showcase featuring the School of Medicine Office of Research, CTSC, UC Davis Library, Comparative Pathology, Center for Healthcare Policy and Research, Aggie Square Animal Behavior Core, Tech Foundry, Mouse Biology Program and the NAMS Testing Center. The reception provided attendees with opportunities to connect across disciplines and explore new partnerships for future research endeavors.

School of Medicine Office of Research

More than a year after the opening of Aggie Square, its impact continues to reshape the UC Davis research enterprise. For the Space and Safety units at the School of Medicine Office of Research, what began as a major relocation effort has evolved into an ongoing process of growth and adaptation. Most planned research groups have now completed their move into Aggie Square, and research space assignments have largely been finalized. Yet the work behind the scenes remains as active as ever.

Aggie Square was never simply about relocating laboratories. It represented a new model for bringing together research, education, health care, industry and community partners in a shared environment designed to spark innovation. As research teams settled into their new spaces, the Research Space Oversight and Safety Management teams played a critical role in ensuring that the transition was not only successful, but sustainable.

Their work began long before the first researchers arrived. Safety staff partnered with investigators to manage chemical inventories, remove outdated and hazardous materials, coordinate equipment moves and support the installation of sensitive scientific instruments. At the same time, they developed operational systems unique to Aggie Square, including specialized workflows for loading docks, compressed gas management, medical waste disposal and laboratory support services. Researchers received training and guidance on new responsibilities associated with operating in a leased research environment, ensuring that safety was embedded into daily operations from the start.

Meanwhile, the ripple effects of the move continue across the broader research enterprise. As laboratories vacated previous spaces, the Research Space Oversight team coordinated the assessment, cleanup, renovation and reassignment of research facilities throughout the School of Medicine portfolio, creating opportunities for new faculty recruitment, program growth and modernization.

Aggie Square itself continues to evolve. In addition to housing a growing community of researchers, the district is welcoming new tenants, including the School of Medicine Office of Research, the Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC), the UC Davis Graduate School of Management and Valley Vision, a regional nonprofit organization focused on economic and community development. Together, these organizations contribute to the collaborative ecosystem that Aggie Square was designed to foster.

Aggie Square has also become a hub for connection, bringing together the university, researchers, industry partners and the broader Sacramento community. Designed to be a welcoming neighbor to Oak Park, the innovation district hosts community events such as the Aggie Square Farmers Market, while programs like Aggie Square MIX create opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs and community organizations to exchange ideas and explore new collaborations. The School of Medicine Office of Research's SPARK program has similarly helped connect researchers across disciplines and departments.

The work supporting these transitions often happens out of sight, but its impact is felt throughout the institution. From laboratory safety and infrastructure planning to space allocation and future development, these teams help ensure that researchers can focus on discovery while working in environments that are safe, functional and designed for collaboration.

Aggie Square may have opened its doors more than a year ago, but its transformation is still underway.

Medical Microbiology and Immunology Research at UC Davis

Immunology research asks a fundamental question: how do microbes and the immune system interact to shape health and disease? Scientists study how pathogens invade the body, how the immune system responds and how the microbiome influences disease risk. These early discoveries help identify targets for new therapies and vaccines.

From there, research moves into translation—where findings are tested and refined—and ultimately into clinical care, where new approaches are evaluated in patients. Insights from patient outcomes then feed back into the research process, driving the next generation of discovery. This continuous cycle advances new strategies to prevent and treat disease.

At UC Davis, this work is strengthened by a highly collaborative environment spanning multiple schools, colleges and research centers across the university. UC Davis hosts a uniquely collaborative research ecosystem, bringing together expertise from the School of Medicine, UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, College of Biological Sciences, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the California National Primate Research Center. This breadth of expertise supports a comprehensive approach to understanding host–microbe interactions across biological systems.

The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) at UC Davis is a central hub for this work, advancing research that strengthens immunity, prevents infection and improves long-term health. Department programs are integral to the university’s focus on addressing infectious diseases. Researchers use the state-of-the-art technologies of genomics, proteomics and imaging to study the genes and proteins of the pathogens and their hosts to identify novel targets for prevention and therapy.

Core Areas of Research

Faculty in MMI contribute to a substantial portfolio in research areas such as microbial pathogenesis, immune system function and host–microbe interactions.

Microbial Pathogenesis and Infection Biology

Researchers investigate how pathogens invade, persist and spread within the body. This includes studying how organisms such as Salmonella interact with intestinal tissues, how malaria parasites engage vascular systems and how viruses like HIV establish reservoirs in key organs such as gut-associated lymphoid tissue.

This work provides critical insight into the mechanisms that initiate and sustain infection and helps identify targets for intervention.

Immune System Function and Regulation

A major focus of the department is understanding how the immune system detects and responds to infection, particularly at mucosal surfaces where many infections begin.

Faculty study innate immune defenses, antimicrobial peptides and the development of immune responses over time. Research in this area also examines how physiological and environmental factors, including hormones, aging and chronic infection, shape immune function and barrier integrity.

Host–Microbe and Host–Parasite Interactions

MMI researchers also examine the dynamic relationships between microbes and their hosts at a systems level.

This includes studying how genetic factors influence susceptibility to infection, how hosts mount immune responses to parasites and how microbial communities impact inflammation and disease. These efforts highlight both harmful and beneficial host–microbe interactions and their role in shaping health outcomes.

Current funded research projects in the MMI Department include 2 P01 awards and a U19 award (Research Program awards), two R37 MERIT awards, and numerous R01 awards totaling $14,160,921 in 2025. 

Satya Dandekar, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor and Chair

Research focuses on the molecular pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infections, with a particular emphasis on gastrointestinal mucosal lymphoid tissue (GALT) as a major target of infection and viral reservoir.


Andreas Bäumler, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair for Research

Research focuses on interactions between the intestinal mucosa, enteric pathogens and the microbiota.


Dennis Hartigan-O'Connor, M.D., Ph.D., Professor

Research focuses on the development of the human immune system and its interactions with chronic infections, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).


Renée M. Tsolis, Ph.D., Professor

Research focuses on host-pathogen interactions, bacterial infections, concurrent infections, brucellosis, malaria and salmonellosis.

Research focuses on antibody therapeutics, protein engineering, cancer immunotherapy, dual-specificity antibodies and mechanisms of cancer cell death.


Verena Link, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

Research focuses on how nutrition, the microbiome and genetic diversity influence immune system function in health and chronic inflammatory diseases.

Scholarly Impact

Research excellence is reflected not only in scientific breakthroughs but also in the influence those discoveries have on the broader research community. As shown below, MMI faculty have produced an impressive body of scholarly work between 2020 and 2025, earning numerous citations and contributing to the department’s reputation as a leader in biomedical research.
