A ribbon-cutting ceremony is a joyful occasion – it represents growth, access and a fresh patient experience. Wednesday morning, colleagues gathered before the first patients arrived to open a new Dermatology clinic at 77 Cadillac Drive, Suite 120, in Sacramento.

The clinic is part of a medical office building that houses other tenants. Close to the American River, the location is surrounded by tall trees and is close to restaurants, fitness centers and a grocery store.

Plus, the clinic has great neighbors. Upstairs is a UC Davis Health dermatology procedure clinic, and down the hall is the colorful Pediatric Heart Center. Dermatology operates other locations at the C Street Clinic and in Folsom, Elk Grove and Roseville.

Increasing need for dermatology care

Demand for dermatology services is growing. By opening new access points around the region and updating clinics with the latest medical technology, UC Davis Health Ambulatory Care is responding to patient needs.

Plus, the new clinic is a Community Physicians Group (CPG) site, which means patients with PPO plans can choose to receive timely specialty care closer to where they live and work.

Over the past two years, Dermatology has also expanded capacity by recruiting five additional providers to improve patient access, reduce wait times and increase appointment availability across the region. Patient capacity has increased by more than 22%.

‘It takes a village’

“It takes a village to get these new sites up and going,” said dermatologist Samuel Hwang. “Dermatology has such potential for growth, and I thank you all for making that possible.”

Dermatologist Smita Awasthi will also practice at the clinic, alongside nurse practice manager Lisa Young, who is new to UC Davis Health.  

To prepare for patients, the team opened up about a couple blocks of appointments before the clinic officially opened. During this “dry run,” physicians and staff could run through workflows and test equipment. Turns out they needed a few brighter lights in the exam room, for instance.

By Wednesday, everyone seemed prepared and excited to officially open their doors to patients.
