First In-Utero Stem Cell Therapy for Spina Bifida Shows Safety
A UC Davis Health research team has safely performed the world’s first spina bifida treatment combining fetal surgery with stem cells, according to Phase 1 results from the ongoing CuRe Trial published in The Lancet. Researchers reported no safety concerns related to the stem cells, and all procedures were completed successfully. The CuRe Trial is currently enrolling for its Phase 1/2a study.

Wildfire Smoke Study Examines Autism Risk
A study by researchers at UC Davis Health and UCLA suggests that exposure to intense wildfire smoke during pregnancy may be associated with an increased likelihood of autism in children. The study, which evaluated more than 8.6 million California births, found the strongest associations during high-intensity smoke events and in areas with generally cleaner air.

Woman Gets Life Back After Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Diagnosis
A patient with severe incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse came to UC Davis Health for a solution. Her treatment team, led by Stacey Wallach, M.D., chief of urogynecology, helped her regain function and independence following cystocele and rectocele surgical repair and the implantation of a sacral nerve neurostimulator.
