Celebrating International Self-Care Day

Staff share best practices to tend to their well-being

(SACRAMENTO)

In honor of International Self-Care Day, July 24, staff shared simple, meaningful practices that help them recharge, find balance and care for their well-being. From creative hobbies and time outdoors to movement, meditation and connection with loved ones, their reflections offer practical inspiration for making self-care part of everyday life.

Here’s what staff had to say about their self-care practices:

“My favorite form of self-care is walking my rescue dogs. We go for walks during the week and enjoy longer walks in nature on the weekends. It gives me a chance to decompress, clear my mind, and enjoy the fresh air while spending quality time with them. Here’s a picture of us after one of our walks!”

“I approach self-care in two ways: social connection and creative outlets. Making plans with friends and family lifts my mood, and face painting has become a meaningful hobby after I shifted my social media habits away from late-night scrolling. It gives me an easy way to use free moments, connect with others, offer them a bit of self-care, and volunteer.”

Uma Anand, director, Academic and Staff Assistance Program

“For me, self-care is anything that brings a sense of peace, joy, and balance. I find that in listening to the sound of ocean waves, taking walks, cooking, helping others, and spending meaningful time with friends and family. More than anything else, though, meditation is what helps me reconnect with myself and leaves me feeling grounded and renewed.”

Julie Zech, program coordinator, WorkLife

“This summer, I taught myself how to needlepoint and it has been a lovely source of self-care. I particularly love to listen to audiobooks as I stitch, and I use the time to get lost in a book as I create something with my hands. I am currently listening to 'The Calamity Club,' and it has been a wonderful escape for me.”

“Soccer is my go-to activity for self-care. It gives me an opportunity to clear my mind, stay physically active, and enjoy teamwork and friendly competition.”

Marla Dolcini, program coordinator, WorkLife and Employee Well-being

“Dedicating three days a week to reformer Pilates is my go-to self-care ritual. It is my non-negotiable 50 minutes to unplug, breathe, and build strength from the inside out. This routing is what keeps me grounded and centered through a busy week.”

“Gardening and knitting both start with simple beginnings a tiny seed or a ball of yarn. The real magic isn't what you start with; it's in the quiet patience of watching it become something beautiful.”
