Mission

Affiliated with UC Davis, the Sutter CAMPEP-Approved Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program is a two-year program designed for individuals at a Master’s or Ph.D. level who seek training in clinical radiation oncology physics.

The physics resident participates directly in the clinical routine, under the supervision of experienced radiation oncology physicists and physicians, while receiving comprehensive training in the areas of external beam planning and treatment delivery, treatment aid design and fabrication, brachytherapy planning and delivery, dose measurement, radiation treatment calibration, quality assurance, and radiation safety. 

Graduates of this program will have received sufficient clinical training to prepare them for work as a radiation oncology physicist and certification in the specialty of Therapeutic Radiological Physics by the American Board of Radiology. A certificate will be provided to each resident upon completion of the program.

Program Structure

  1. The Sutter Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program is an official program through the collaboration of UC Davis Health and Sutter Medical Foundation (SMF), administered through SMF Radiation Oncology Centers (ROC).
  2. SMF ROC has four centers located in the greater Sacramento-Roseville area. The primary physics residency training site will be at Sacramento ROC Center, which is approximately one mile away from the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. ROC offers comprehensive and the state-of-the-art radiation therapy treatment, including external beam SBRT, SRS, HDR brachytherapy, Gamma Knife, 3D printing and more.
  3. ROC's physics department currently consists of 12 experienced medical physicists and eight medical dosimetrists. In addition to the physics residency program, the department also has an affiliation with UW-La Crosse (UWLX) dosimetry program. Medical physics research topics are available either within ROC, or through collaboration with UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.
