Peter G. Moore, M.D., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus and Past Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, was the first member of the department to participate in an ORBIS mission. UC Davis anesthesiology faculty have since maintained a longstanding collaboration with Orbis International, supporting global eye health through anesthesia education, simulation-based training, and interdisciplinary capacity building led by Peter G. Moore, M.D., Ph.D., and Niroop R. Ravula, M.B.B.S., F.R.C.A. Over the years, UC Davis faculty have partnered with ophthalmologists, surgeons, nurses, and educators through the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital and affiliated training programs to strengthen perioperative safety and anesthesia practices in resource-limited settings. These collaborations emphasize sustainable workforce development through hands-on teaching, simulation-based education, mentorship, and systems strengthening rather than episodic clinical service alone. The partnership has also provided valuable opportunities for residents and faculty to engage in bidirectional learning, fostering cultural humility, innovation, and global perspectives in perioperative care. Through its ongoing involvement with ORBIS, UC Davis continues to advance equitable access to safe anesthesia and surgical care while supporting the development of resilient local healthcare systems worldwide.

Education and Training Initiatives
• October 2016: Hosted a two week intensive Orbis International training program at the UC Davis Center for Simulation and Education Advancement, providing simulation based education for 25 nurses and physicians from around the world.
• July 2018: Participated in the Orbis Train the Trainers program, focused on sustainable capacity building for global anesthesia and perioperative care educators.
• October 2022: Organized a comprehensive, department led program at the UC Davis Simulation Center, training 30 health care professionals from Chile, Bolivia, and Peru, with an emphasis on perioperative safety and anesthesia support for global eye care.
International Outreach and Partnerships
• Chile (2019): Participated in Orbis educational missions and hosted an anesthesiology resident from Santiago at UC Davis for a one month pediatric anesthesiology observer ship.
• Mongolia (Multiple Years): Faculty participation in recurring Orbis outreach missions focused on clinical training and anesthesia capacity building.
• Zambia (November 2024): Contributed to Orbis outreach efforts supporting eye care delivery, anesthesia education, and interdisciplinary perioperative training.
